When complete, the park will provide a broad array of amenities and experiences for the public including a community gathering area with a large trellised plaza, picnic pavilion and open lawn for events, two play areas with traditional and natural play features and experiences, an historic railroad exhibit interpreting the site’s previous use by the Beltline Railway, a large community garden and demonstration gardens. Over half the site will be designed as habitat and hiking trails with ongoing opportunities for outdoor education and nature-watching. A trail loop for bikes and pedestrians will encircle the park and interpretive signage and public art displays will be featured throughout the park. Frog Pad Park is located adjacent to residential development and the design required balancing public access needs with the desires of the surrounding neighborhood. John Hykes project managed staff in the preparation of a landscape concept plan and detailed construction documents to restore two outfall culverts on forks of Cerrito Creek. The design highlights stormwater management in the Ohlone Greenway Natural Area, and incorporates the interception of stormwater from Fairmount Avenue. The project provides decorative rain gardens, an informal explorative natural play area, interpretive design elements, and improved riparian habitat and water quality. The project site master plan prepared will incorporate a passive neighborhood park with a future bicycle trail. While at PlaceWorks, John Hykes led the design of the park and conducted extensive community outreach. In the two decades since Caltrans abandoned the freeway ramp, Albany residents have strongly voiced the need for a new neighborhood park in the area. The site is wedged between the Interstate 80 elevated freeway and Pierce Street, creating concerns for noise, safety, air quality, and visibility both into and from the site. The existing elevations and steep slopes will require creative site planning and grading to allow functional spaces and optimal pedestrian access. The gateway design provides a respite from the Interstate 880 highway corridor immediately to the east, focusing visitors instead on the site’s unique waterfront setting, taking inspiration from migratory bird patterns, tidal fluctuations, and views of Arrowhead Marsh. The design incorporates fluid, rolling shapes, a boardwalk connecting to the existing Bay Trail segment and a public plaza. John prepared a schematic design, construction documents, detailed construction specifications, and cost estimates for a revitalized park that improves a highly used, loved, and much-needed community amenity. The landscape improvements, children’s playground upgrade, and rehabilitation of existing baseball and passive use fields will help to reinforce the sense of community, incorporate sustainable principles, and serve as a unique gathering and recreational place that nearby residents can take pride in.
